US FSIS Recalled 120 Thousand Pounds of E. Coli Contaminated Beef Products

Listen to this article

The US FSIS (Food Safety and Inspection Service) of the US Department of Agriculture issued a statement. It says a US company is revoking at least 120,000 pounds of ground beef products. These beef products are revoked following fears that it was polluted with E. coli bacteria.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also issued a statement. The agency said E. coli (Escherichia coli) can charge diarrhea, vomiting, critical stomach clogs, and other symptoms. The major spread reasons involve ingesting food or water with polluted human or animal waste after contacting people or animals.

The Food Safety & Inspection Service also issued a notice. The recall pretended to be more than 120,870 pounds of raw ground beef products from Lakeside Refrigerated Services (a New Jersey-based company). However, Marketside Butcher, Thomas Farms, and Nature’s Reserve were brands involved in carrying the contaminated beef.

Recalled Beef Products Were Prepared in February

Point to be noted that the possibly tainted beef products were prepared from 1st February through 8th April. These products were distributed to retailers across the US. The FSIS said these products contain labels carrying the establishment number “EST. 46841” inside the inspection mark of the USDA.

The FSIS said it has alarmed that some people can discover contaminated products in their refrigerators or freezers. The service said consumers are advised not to consume if they had really purchased these products. The customers should throw these products away or return them to the place of purchase.

The Shiga Toxin-Producing E. Coli Bacterium

It is important that the O103 strain of the STEC (Shiga toxin-producing E. coli) bacteria is discovered during routine testing. However, the US health department hasn’t yet received any reports of sickness from the consumption of such products. The FSIS said people could experience sickness 2 to 8 days after consuming STEC contaminated products.

Moreover, some cases could generate more critical infections but most affected people could recover within a week. The FSIS said HUS (Hemolytic uremic syndrome) is a specific type of kidney failure but unusual with STEC O103 infection.

Around 265 Thousand STEC Infection Cases Annually

The CDC also said that most strains of E. coli are inoffensive. These strains reside in the intestines of healthy humans and animals. But humans and animals producing Shiga toxin can cause disease. The health agency said there are an estimated 265,000 per year STEC infections in the United States. Escherichia coli is also known the E. coli.

This is a Gram-negative, discretional anaerobic, and rod-shaped bacterium of the genus Escherichia. It is often discovered in the lower intestine of warm-blooded organisms. Most E. coli refrains are inoffensive and hurtle but some types including ETEC and EPEC could generate critical food poisoning. These strains are often responsible for food contaminant activities.

  1. Coli Bacterium Within the Polluted Matter

However, hurtling strains are an essential part of the normal micro-biota of the belly. It can produce vitamin K2 and provides benefits to its hosts. This can prevent the colonization of the intestine with dangerous bacteria for developing a reciprocal relationship. It is important that E. coli is ejected into the environment within polluted matter.

Meanwhile, the bacterium can massively develop in a fresh rotten matter within aerobic conditions for 3 days but gradually declines.
