U.S President Donald Trump has announced the U.S government is planning on banning some flavored e-cigarette pods. Trump said the federal government is due to announce a new master plan to tackle underage vaping following a spate of deaths connected to the practice. Trump said, “We’re going to protect our families, we’re going to protect our children, and we’re going to protect the industry”. His announcement wasn’t clear about what the plan would entail but suggested certain flavors in cartridge-based e-cigarettes would be taken off the market for a specific period of time. On Tuesday, The Wall Street Journal reported that the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) would ban the sale of most flavored e-cigarettes, including those sold by Juul and NJOY.

The news outlet also reported that tank-based vaping systems are less popular among teenagers. It would still allow users to custom-mix flavors. It is noteworthy Trump and his top health officials said in September they would soon sweep virtually all flavored e-cigarettes from the market because of their appeal to young children and teens. But, the efforts stopped after vaping lobbyists pushed back. The White House advisers informed Trump the ban could cost him votes with adults. All e-cigarettes will need to undergo FDA review from the start of May 2020. The FDA will permit those brands to stay on the market that can ensure the U.S public health.

Trump suggested on Tuesday that a ban on flavored e-cigarettes might be temporary. He informed reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. He also hosted a New Year’s Eve party at his resort. It is important that e-cigarette pods formulated to taste like tobacco or menthol would still be allowed. Trump also said, ”People have died from this, they died from vaping. We think we understand why. But we are doing a very exhaustive examination. And hopefully, everything will be back on the market very very shortly“. He added, ”Look, vaping can be good from the standpoint. You look at the e-cigarettes, you stop smoking. If you can stop smoking, that’s a big advantage. So, we think we’re going to get it back on the market very, very quickly”.
