US President Joe Biden issued a statement that the Russian government will pay a heavy price if they attack Ukraine. He said that he has made it clear to Russian President Vladimir Putin that the US will impose heavy sanctions if the Russian government makes more military movements to invade Ukraine. President Biden said the United States will improve its presence in Europe in collaboration with its NATO allies and it will have to be a heavy price to pay for it. He made his statement on Thursday during a phone call with Russian President Putin. The two presidents mostly discussed de-escalation in Ukraine and US-Russia diplomatic relations during a 50-minute call, heading into European talks that will start in mid-January.

Point to be noted that tens of thousands of Russian troops have gathered at the Ukrainian border. It raised worries and concerns amongst the US and its allies about a possible invasion. Russia has said it built up its military to prevent NATO expansion towards its borders and to defend Russian ethnic nationals living in the war-torn east Ukrainian region of Donbas. It is important that at least 13 thousand lives have been lost in the Donbas region since Russia’s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. Russian-backed separatists have fought in the region, while the Russian government has officially rejected any involvement. Ukraine alleged the Russian government of trying to destabilize and claim the region.

However, Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yury Ushakov has rejected the allegation. Ushakov said Russia needs a swift end to conflict and didn’t need to get bogged down in endless discussions with the US government about the best way to protect Russians in Donbas. A spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, Emily Horne said the Biden administration officials have spoken with leaders across Europe to discourage a Russian invasion. The Biden administration officials have spoken to officials within the European Union, the 57-member Organization for Security, Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Moreover, NATO is a multinational force that looks to limit the military influence of Russia and other countries in Europe.
