DHS now needs to Scan your Face at the Border

Apple has the correct idea when it comes to the future of identification with Face ID built into the new iPhone X. The DHS (Department of Homeland Security) needs to scan the faces of people entering or leaving the country. It will not need to have anyone get out of their cars. The Silicon Valley office of DHS is hosting an “Industry Day” on 14th November 2017 in order to find ways. If folks are wearing sunglasses and hats or the driver is looking away from the cameras.  It would prevent for having travelers in vehicles stop at border crossings. It might create a significant amount of traffic delays. The U.S Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is working to implement a face biometric entry-exit system. It would reflect the least impact on travel and trade.

This call is looking for innovative solutions to capture facial recognition quality images from travelers in order to facilitate identity checks without requiring travelers to leave the vehicle. DHS also indicated that images will be taken with such a system. It will be used to validate the identities of the travelers and document their entry or exit from the United States. The paper also pointed out that images should be packaged and transmitted to compare against DHS holdings to validate identities of travelers and document entry/exit. It sounds a lot like a database of people leaving and entering into the country. This requirement might create issues from the privacy-minded individuals and advocacy groups. DHS has a clause in the request for proposals that asks for innovative approaches. It allows for hiding identity of U.S. citizen traveler data.
