The Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned the United States against seeking aggressive policies toward Tehran. He said that preventing Iran from exporting oil would be “very dangerous”. He didn’t mention talks between both countries. In May, U.S. President Donald Trump pulled out of the 2015 international nuclear deal with Iran in May and announced sanctions against the OPEC member. Washington is pushing allies to cut imports of Iranian oil to zero and will restore sanctions on Iran’s oil sales in November. Most international sanctions against Tehran were lifted in 2016 in exchange for Iran curbing its nuclear program. But, Imposing sanctions on Iran to prevent from selling its oil will be very dangerous and it can’t succeed. Rouhani is in New York for the annual United Nations General Assembly gathering of world leaders.

Iran and US

Rouhani said Iran would only talk to Trump if his administration proved its trustworthiness. He added that economic pressure would not force Tehran to the negotiating table. If Trump needs to talk to Iran, he should first return to the nuclear deal. Point to be noted that Washington and Tehran have been increasingly at odds since May and some U.S officials privately calling for regime change in Iran. Trump said in July that he would be willing to meet the leader of Iran without preconditions to discuss how to improve ties. But, Iran dismissed Trump’s offer. Rouhani said that the U.S. sanctions harm ordinary Iranians but also it puts pressure on foreign companies who have to withdraw from Iran’s market, fearing America’s sanctions. European powers have scrambled to protect Iranian oil revenues and shield companies from the U.S measures to keep them operating in Iran.
